A Roof Solar System is a Better Investment than Community Solar
Community solar is a reliable way to enjoy bill savings in some areas of New York. However, if you own your home, a roof solar system will provide better savings, reliability, and transparent billing.
There are risks to community solar when it isn’t done right. A recent warning from the New York Public Service Commission has revealed that some community solar projects aren’t working as intended.
What is Community Solar?
Community solar describes a range of distributed generation options where solar panels are installed at a site away from homes. The electricity generated is distributed to homes that join the community solar program. The idea is that the community solar project will result in lower bills for members of the program.
When it is well-designed, community solar can be a great option for some areas. However, there are times when things don’t work out as intended.
The New York Public Service Commission said in late July that some customers have been left frustrated by overcharges or late bills, and some have been forced to pull out of community solar projects. The Commission noted that this has either financially harmed some families or reduced their confidence in solar as a concept.
The Commission has warned community solar companies that hefty fines would be imposed if billing issues are not corrected by the end of 2023.
Roof Solar Systems are Ideal for Family Homes
Community solar makes sense in some communities such as areas where it’s impossible or financially unviable to have separate solar systems for each home. Multi-tenant buildings, condos, and apartments are perfect examples. If you own a home in New York and have a rooftop that gets sunlight, then a roof solar system will most likely work better for your needs.
Unlike community solar, with rooftop solar, you own the system, and all the potential savings will be yours to enjoy. Roof solar generates savings in two unique ways…
- During the day while your solar panels are on, they’ll help to power your home. This will reduce your usage of the grid, resulting in monthly savings.
- When your system produces more electricity than you use, electricity will be exported out to the grid, spinning your meter in reverse. If you end the month with a surplus, this will be credited to your account.
Most families in New York with rooftop solar will significantly offset their usage from the grid. Savings over time can be significant. The average New York solar installation can pay for itself in savings within the first decade. Solar panels last around 25 to 30 years, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy the returns.
